Website Designer Newcastle: How Your Site Is Planned, Built and Handed Over

Here's exactly how we build a website for a Newcastle business: what we ask, what you need to have ready, what you see before launch, and what you're handed at the end. We're Hunter Web Studio, on King Street in Newcastle.

Who will build my website?

Lachlan Mitchell, our web designer, builds your site from our King Street studio in Newcastle. He was born and raised in Newcastle, studied at the University of Newcastle, and has spent 10 years designing and building websites. He's the one who plans your pages and builds your site.

What happens in the first call?

It takes about 15 minutes, and there's no charge and no obligation. We'll ask:

  • what you do, and which jobs you want more of
  • which suburbs and towns you work in
  • what your current website does well, and what it doesn't
  • how customers usually find you now

Ring 02 4016 8795, or send the quote form and we'll call you.

What do I need to have ready?

Content is the most common reason websites run late. Newcastle web designers who publish timelines say the same thing. Having these ready makes a big difference:

  • your logo, if you have one
  • 10 to 20 real photos of your work, your van, your shop or your team
  • a list of the services you offer
  • the suburbs and towns you cover
  • your licence number, if your trade needs one
  • your ABN and opening hours
  • the login for your current domain (if you can't find it, we'll help)

How is the site planned and priced?

After the call, you get a written plan. It lists every page, what each one is for, and which area or service it targets. It also has a fixed price. Nothing starts until you say yes.

Websites start from $830. There's no GST on top, because we're not registered for GST. See what each price includes.

When do I see a draft?

Before anything goes live, you get a private link to click through on your own phone. You tell us what to change. Your quote includes 2 rounds of changes. Small sites usually go live 2 to 4 weeks after the go-ahead, and bigger sites 4 to 8 weeks. It depends on the job, and your quote gives the exact time.

How do you make sure it loads fast?

Google's target is that a page shows its main content within 2.5 seconds, and that things on the page don't jump around while it loads. Before launch we check:

  • that photos are sized for phones, not straight off the camera
  • the total size of each page
  • the main content time, against Google's 2.5-second target
  • that nothing shifts as the page loads

You get the speed scores at handover. It matters: when we tested the 10 Newcastle web designers on Google's first page, 6 of them missed that target on their own homepages (desktop test, 30 October 2026).

What do I get on launch day?

A written handover list. It includes:

  • Your domain, with you as the owner. The .au rules say that when someone registers a domain for you, you must be recorded as the registrant. We do it that way every time.
  • Owner access to Google Search Console. If a site has only one owner and that person leaves, everyone else loses access. So you're set up as an owner yourself.
  • Analytics in your name.
  • Every website login.
  • The speed report from launch day.
  • A short walkthrough of how your site fits together.

What happens after launch?

You can put your site on a care plan, which covers hosting, updates, backups and small changes, or look after it yourself.

If you ever leave, your domain and your Google data go with you. The .au rules give you an authorisation code, so you can move your domain to another company whenever you like. A WordPress or hand-built site can move with you too. A Wix, Squarespace or Shopify site stays with that platform, under your own account.

What platform do you build on?

Whichever suits you: WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, or a site we build by hand. If you want to edit it yourself, Wix or Squarespace are the easiest to learn. If you'll want bookings, quote forms or more pages later, WordPress gives the most room. If you sell online, Shopify is built for it. Because we build on all of them, we've no reason to push one.

The platform matters less than how the site is built. In our speed check, 8 of the 10 designers' homepages ran on WordPress, and they scored anywhere from 55 to 100. Read WordPress or Wix for a small business site? for the trade-offs.

Quick answers

Do you work with businesses outside Newcastle?

Yes. We work with businesses in Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Port Stephens, the Hunter Valley and the Central Coast as well.

Can you redesign my site without losing my Google rankings?

That's the aim. Every page address that changes gets a permanent redirect to its new page, so Google and your old links still find it. Page titles that already work are kept.

Do you do SEO?

Every site gets the basics: clear page titles, a page per service and area, a sitemap, and Google Search Console set up. Ongoing SEO to win busy searches is a separate job, and we will tell you honestly if your trade is a hard one to rank for.

Where these numbers come from
